As a new nurse of 6 months I wish I had this book during school and right after graduation. It’s written as if I mentor is speaking to you and not a nursing instructor yelling at you. I used some of the tips the other day at work and was able to catch a patient going into a-fib RVR as soon as it was starting. It’s easy to read and understand, not like reading a textbook at all. If you’re a nursing student or know one you need to get them this book!! I received a free advanced copy.

I liked how practical this book felt compared to a typical nursing textbook. Instead of just throwing a ton of medical information at you, it focuses more on how to actually think through what you are seeing with a patient. The clinical scenarios were probably the strongest part for me because they force you to stop and figure things out instead of just memorizing an answer. I also liked that the same clinical judgment process is used throughout the book, so it starts to feel more natural as you go. The Schema Builder and model answers were helpful for seeing where your reasoning might have gone wrong. It is definitely a long and detailed book, and some sections can feel repetitive, but I think that repetition actually serves a purpose here. Overall, I could see this being genuinely useful for nursing students or newer nurses who know the material but struggle with applying it in real situations.

I am a nurse educator and have worked as a nurse for many years. I can tell you exactly what occurs in the first year after graduation: a newly graduated nurse has read the textbook and passed the NCLEX exam. However, once at the bedside, he or she will likely be paralyzed by uncertainty and doubt about how to apply all of the information learned in school. ...
.......That delay — that moment of "something is going wrong, but I don't know what" — represents the divergence point for patient outcomes. This book directly addresses that issue. All nursing schools should include this book in their transition-to-practice curriculum. All preceptors should give this book to their orientees on the first day. This is not a review manual. This is not a clinical reference. This is something much less common: a book that teaches nurses how to think.

I’m not a nurse but was interested in the title and topic. It did not disappoint. It was eye opening . Every job has a learning curve, but with medical it could be life or death. I like how it was written, explaining how you approach differently. Not a real hard read but interesting.

Do you need a good book for helping nursing students succeed? This book is definitely it! I have read many student success books through my career as an educator, but none was so thorough like this one. AND, it is based on real science in education, nursing, and other disciplines that bring together everything nursing students need to be successful in the program. Highly recommend.
The prioritization framework in New Grad Practice Sim alone was worth it. I finally stopped feeling like I was drowning during my first month of nights.
